South-Central Iowa has a humid continental climate and generally has hot summers, cold winters and mild wet springs. Temperatures vary widely during the year, although it is slightly warmer in southern Iowa than in the northern regions in both summer and winter. Statewide, snowfall averages 30 inches annually and relative humidity averages 72 percent. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September and severe thunderstorms are possible during this time. These storms may produce hail, high winds, and an occasional tornado. Southern Iowa receives less snowfall than northern, and the snow season generally runs from late October to mid-April. December -February is usually the snowiest period, although early spring storms have produced as much as 27 inches of snow in a single storm.
