Council-Bluffs
is located in Pottawattamie County in southwest Iowa. It sits on the bank of the Missouri River and has a population of approximately 60,000 residents. Council Bluffs is several decades older than its significantly larger neighbor across the river, the city of Omaha, Nebraska, which was founded by Council Bluffs businessmen and speculators in 1854 following the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The city was named for the 1804 meeting of the Lewis and Clark Expedition with the Otoe tribe that took place near present day Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska. In 1986, following the liberalization of Iowa gambling laws, The Bluffs Run Greyhound Park opened in Council Bluffs. By 2005, the city was the 19th largest casino market in the United States. Casinos include Ameristar, Harrahs and the Horseshoe Casino, which hosted the World Series of Poker in 2007. Interstate 80, Interstate 29, U.S. Route 6, the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway and the Union Pacific, BNSF, Iowa Interstate and Canadian National Railroads all pass through Council Bluffs. The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway offers many scenic views of privately owned land, state and county parks, wildlife areas and preserves. Two National Natural Landmarks are located in the Loess Hills: the Little Sioux/Smith Lake Site and the Turin Site, which contains the Turin Man prehistoric archaeological site.
