Davenport is located in east-central Iowa along the Mississippi River. It has an estimated population of 100,000 residents. It is part of the Quad Cities, along with neighboring Bettendorf and the Illinois cities of Moline, East Moline and Rock Island. Davenport is home to Saint Ambrose University and Palmer College of Chiropractic. In 2007, Davenport, along with neighboring Rock Island, won the City Livability Award. Three interstates and two major U.S. Highways serve the city. Davenport is home to a minor league baseball team and offers 27 parks and over twelve miles of recreational paths for hiking and biking. Credit Island Park includes a bike path, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and fishing along the Mississippi River. Vander Veer Botanical Park includes a small botanical garden, along with a walking path, a lovely pond and a large fountain. Mount Ida park is on a summit which overlooks the great Mississippi River. Several well-known annual music festivals take place in Davenport, include the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, the Mississippi Valley Fair and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, which is dedicated to Davenport native, Bix Beiderbecke. Other attractions in Davenport include the Davenport Skybridge, Figge Art Museum, Modern Woodmen Park, which is home of the Quad City River Bandits baseball team and the Centennial Bridge.

Eastern Iowa, along the Mississippi River, has a humid continental climate. Summer are known for being hot and humid. Wintertime brings very cold temperatures and often high winds. Snow is likely from November through February. Average snow fall is 30.7 inches annually. Substantial weather changes frequently occur at three to four day intervals as a result of mid-latitude storm tracks. While situated squarely in the path of Tornado Alley, no devastating tornado has ever touched down in the mid-eastern region of Iowa. The reason for the lack of tornadoes may be due to the fact that the Mississippi River and Rock River merge together close to the city. However, flooding is often a severe problem in eastern Iowa. Autumn brings pleasant temperatures and colorful foliage.
