Iowa-Falls
is located in Hardin County in north-central Iowa along the beautiful Iowa River. The river and the cliffs and parks situated along the river have given Iowa Falls the nickname "The Scenic City." It is also a regional transportation center, located along U.S. Routes 20 and 65. As of the 2000 census, the population of Iowa Falls was 5,193 residents. Iowa Falls offers the best of both rural and city living. It has a charming, small town atmosphere with a wide variety of shopping, restaurants and recreational opportunities. In addition, it is just an hours drive away from the cultural, shopping and entertainment centers of Des Moines. Iowa Falls is home to Ellsworth Community College, a two-year college founded in 1890 by Eugene S. Ellsworth. There are several historical sites and buildings in the Iowa Falls area, including the Metropolitan Opera House (circa 1899.) At the time of its opening, the theater was considered the most attractive and complete opera house in the state of Iowa. The theater soon gained a reputation as the big time theater in a little town. Patrons came from miles around for the productions staged there. Today the building is a movie theater. There are several historic and scenic bridges in Iowa Falls, including the Alden Bridge, River Street Bridge, Oak Street Bridge and the Iowa Falls Bridge, which at its construction in 1928, was called the "longest arch span, either concrete or steel, in the state of Iowa."

Central Iowa is located near the center of North America. It is classified as having a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. During the six warmer months of the year, the prevailing moist southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico produces summer rainfall and thunderstorms. These sometimes severe thunderstorms may produce high winds, hail, torrential rains and occasionally a tornado. Hailstorms are more severe in the northwest portion of the state. Seasonal snowfall across the state is 32 inches and the snow season generally runs late October through mid-April. The most snowfall occurs in January, February and March and blizzards are a possibility. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year in central Iowa, with mild days and cool nights.
