Lansing is a small city located in Allamakee County in the northeast corner of Iowa. The population as of the 2000 census was 1,012 residents. Lansing is a Mississippi River town with a resort-like feeling from the seasonal recreational boaters who visit the area each year. It is a beautiful little town filled with renovated stores, arts & crafts shops, antique shops and small town businesses. It is located at Mississippi main channel Mile Marker 663. The Great Mississippi provides all kinds of recreational activities and Lansing is also near the Yellow River State Forest and Pikes Peak and Wyalusing State Park. Yellow River is a 6,600-acre forest located just 15 miles south of Lansing. It offers fishing, canoeing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, scenic drives, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. A few of the other attractions in Lansing include the Commercial Fishing Museum, The Old Stone School Building, which was built in 1864 and in use for 108 years, making it the oldest schoolhouse in continuous use west of the Mississippi. In addition, many of the buildings that line Main Street in Lansing are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just six miles from Lansing are the Fish Farm Mounds, a state preserve where you can see the work of prehistoric Native American Mound Builders. Nearby is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, where visitors can view animal shaped and geometric mounds created by an ancient Indian culture. The Blackhawk Bridge, completed in 1931, is another major attraction, as it encompasses the beauty of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of the city of Lansing.

Lansing Weather & Climate

The northeastern corner of Iowa, right along the main channel of the Mississippi River, has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. However, weather here is often not as extreme as that found in other parts of the Midwest, such as Minnesota or Wisconsin. Spring is usually wet and rainy, summers are sunny and warm, autumn is pleasant and mild, and winters are typically cold and snowy. Average snowfall in this area is 30.7 inches annually. Substantial weather changes frequently occur at three to four day intervals as a result of mid-latitude storm tracks. While situated squarely in the path of Tornado Alley, no devastating tornado has ever touched down in this region of Iowa. However, flooding is often a severe problem along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.
