Montrose is a historic, scenic town located in Lee County in the southeastern corner of Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the population was 957 residents. Montrose is situated along the Mississippi River and is part of the Fort Madison-Keokuk, Iowa/Missouri statistical area. The town of Montrose is a place steeped in history. The name of the town means Mount of Roses and was originally established by David Kilbourne, a prominent Keokuk leader. At one time, the hillside along Bluff Park was covered in beautiful roses. The famous French explorers, Father Marquette and Louis Joliet, traded with the Indians in the Montrose area, and the town of Montrose is also home to the first apple orchard in the state of Iowa. Of other historic significance, Fort Des Moines was located in what is now River View Park in Montrose. Also, the historic Mormon Trail began here in the winter of 1847, when the Mormons camped in the area for several days before beginning their westward trek. The town of Montrose is host to an annual Pride of Montrose festival each Father¢s Day weekend and also a Watermelon Festival, held annually the fourth Thursday, Friday and Saturday in August. Montrose boasts two baseball diamonds and three lovely city parks, the newest being River View Park.
