Mount-Ayr
is a small town located in Ringgold County in southwestern Iowa. The population as of the 2000 census was 1,822 residents. Special events in the Mount Ayr area include the annual Ringgold County Fair and the Autumn in the Ayr Days. Other attractions include the Ramsey Farm, a historic 180-acre working farm and 1870s restored village depicting the life and culture of rural Iowa between the late 1800s and mid-1950s. Mount Ayr has a charming historical town square that features cobblestone brick streets and an early 1900s courthouse. Other places of interest in Mount Ayr include the classic Carnegie library, a restored theater, an 1879 restored depot museum, several antique shops, gift shops, taverns and restaurants. For outdoor recreation, Mount Ayr offers a 9-hole golf course, miniature golf and a dirt bike trail. The surrounding area is filled with recreational opportunities such as hiking, fishing, boating, hunting, biking and cross-country skiing. Fifes Grove and Loch Ayr feature a wooded area with camping, a pond for fishing, picnic area, playground and a gazebo. Judge Lewis Recreational Park has a large swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, baseball diamond, sand volleyball court, horseshoe courts, bike and hiking trail and picnic area complete with a playground for children. In addition, Poe Hollow Park and Ringgold Trailway are just located just two miles east of Mount Ayr.

Mount Ayr Weather & Climate

Southern Iowa, right along the main channel of the Mississippi River, has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. However, weather here is often not as extreme as that found in other parts of the Midwest, such as Minnesota or Wisconsin. Spring is usually wet and rainy, summers are sunny and warm, autumn is pleasant and mild, and winters are typically cold and snowy. Average snowfall in this area is 30.7 inches annually. Substantial weather changes frequently occur at three to four day intervals as a result of mid-latitude storm tracks. While situated squarely in the path of Tornado Alley, no devastating tornado has ever touched down in this region of Iowa. However, flooding is often a severe problem along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.
