Rock-Rapids
is located in Lyon County in the northwest corner of Iowa. It is the county seat and as of the 2000 census had a population of 2,573 residents. Rock Rapids is situated in an area of Iowa known for its strong Dutch heritage and conservative politics. One of the highlights of Rock Rapids is Island Park, so named because part of the park is completely surrounded by the Rock River. Island Park features a Rock Island railroad trestle that has been resurfaced as part of a new recreational trail. A museum is located in the nearby retired depot. There are two small dams in Island Park and one can drive across the river via a small bridge. Outdoor recreational activities in the area include hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, snowmobiling and ice skating. Several special events are held in Rock rapids throughout the year. Heritage Days are held each June and features a parade, the crowning of Miss and Little Miss Rock Rapids, live entertainment, lumberjack competitions, canoe, bike and road races and much more. The Lyon County Fair is called "the best four days of summer," and in October, Rock Rapids is host to the Tri-State Art Show. There are also several great promotions and special events held in the city during the winter holiday season. Rock Rapids is approximately 32 miles southeast of Sioux Falls.

The northwest corner of Iowa lies in the humid continental zone and has four distinct seasons. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September. Severe thunderstorms are possible during this time. However, this northwest section is drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions of the state. Seasonal snowfall statewide averages 32 inches. Blizzards are not uncommon in northwest Iowa and tornadoes are possible in spring and summer. January and February are generally the coldest months, although late winter and early spring storms in March and April have been known to produce large amounts of snow. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumns are generally mild and pleasant.

The closest airports in the area are Joe Foss Field (FSD) located about 30 miles northwest of Rock Rapids in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the Spencer Municipal airport (SPW) located approximately 51 miles southeast of Rock Rapids in Spencer, Iowa, the Chan Gurney Municipal airport (YKN) located roughly 70 miles west of Rock Rapids in Yankton, South Dakota, and finally Sioux Gateway Col Bud Day Field (SUX) located around 71 miles south of Rock Rapids in Sioux City, Iowa.
