Sioux-City is located in Plymouth and Woodbury counties in western Iowa. The estimated population is 83,262 residents. The city is situated at the head of the Missouri River approximately 90 miles north of the Omaha-Council Bluffs area. It is directly across the Missouri River from South Sioux City, Nebraska. Two bridges - the Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Interstate 129 bridge - connect Sioux City with South Sioux City. Sioux City is home to Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, St. Lukes College and Western Iowa Tech Community College. Stone State Park is located in the northwest corner of the city, overlooking the South Dakota/Iowa border. The park is near the northernmost extent of the Loess Hills at the transition from clay bluffs and prairie to sedimentary rock hills and bur oak forest along the Iowa side of the Big Sioux River. It has been popular for decades with picnickers and day hikers, and has been a local hot spot for mountain biking since the late 1980s. The Dorothy Pecut Nature Center is located within the boundaries of Stone Park and contains a butterfly garden and well-marked hiking trails. Sioux City is home to Grandview Park in the downtown area. It includes the Municipal Bandshell where the Saturday in the Park music festival is held annually. An extensive rose garden is located behind the bandshell. Other parks in Sioux City include Pulaski Park, Lathan Park, War Eagle Park and Riverside Park, which is one of the oldest recreational parks in the area. The city is also home to the Orpheum Theater, which is the largest historic theater in Iowa, the Sioux City Public Museum and Sioux City Art Center.
