Waterloo
is the county seat of Black Hawk County in northeastern Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the population was 68,747 residents. Waterloo was originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing. It was first settled in 1845, near two Meskwaki Native American villages along the Cedar River. Attractions in Waterloo include tours of the John Deere Tractor Assembly Plant and Engine Works, and the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum. Waterloo is the headquarter of the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area, which is an official National Park Service Heritage Area that consists of 80 sites throughout the northeastern two-thirds of Iowa. The Grout Museum District is a multi-building museum that focuses on telling the story of Waterloo and the surrounding area. Waterloo is also part of the very well-developed Cedar Trail Network, which includes more than 80 miles of paved hiking and biking trails. The city of Waterloo is also home to a recreational waterpark. Downtown Waterloo hosts several unique festivals throughout the year, including the bi-weekly Fridayloo during the summer months, My Waterloo Days in June, BBQloo in July, the 4th of July Fireworks Festival, Tour dLoo in October and the Iowa Irish Festival in August.
