Cherokee is a city in northeast Iowa. The population as of the 2000 census was 5,369 residents. Cherokee is the home of the Sanford Museum and Planetarium which has exhibits and activities on a variety of subjects including: archeology, art, astronomy, geology, history, natural history, and paleontology. Cherokee is also known for being the smallest town in the world to have its own symphony orchestra, the Cherokee Symphony. This 60-member orchestra has been referred to as the best kept secret in Northwest Iowa." The city of Cherokee also holds several special events throughout the year, including the annual jazz festival in January, the Cherokee County Fair, and the Cherokee Rodeo. The nearby Cherokee Sewer Site is a well-preserved prehistoric Indian bison processing site which helped to redefine the Archaic period in the Midwest. The Phipps Site, which is a National Historic Landmark, is a 1000-year old Plains farming village that may have been fortifed. Cherokee offers several city parks for outdoor recreation, such as hiking, picnicking, biking, tennis and more. The annual Cherokee Jazz Festival draws people from all over the region and includes pub crawls, a jam session on Saturday afternoon, concerts and a Sunday brunch buffet. Cherokee also offers a wide variety of restaurants, from fast food to fine dining and a good choice of accommodations.
