Storm-Lake
is located in Buena Vista County in the northwestern portion of Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the population was 10,076 residents. The city is home to Buena Vista University. Called Iowas Hidden Treasure, Storm Lake is a vibrant community nestled on the shore of the 3200-acre lake. The beautiful Storm Lake offers unlimited recreational opportunities. The Lake Trail gives hikers, bikers and joggers a spectacular view of the waterfront, while the lake itself offers some of the best walleye fishing in the state. Catfish is a close second. Other activities in Storm Lake include camping, picnicking, volleyball, boating, sailing and every other kind of water sport imaginable. The city of Storm Lake also offers other attractions, such as their annual Star Spangled Spectacular. This special Independence Day celebration includes a large parade, races, an old-fashioned ice cream social and at dusk, fireworks over the lake. Other attractions in the town of Spirit Lake include the historic Harker House, an 1875 Victorian that takes visitors back in time. Also, the Living Heritage Tree Museum is a unique attraction, with trees that each tell a story: such as one of the descendants of the original trees planted by Johnny Appleweed. Northern Iowa has a four-season climate with warm summers and very cold winters. The average summer temperature is 70.3 degrees and the average wintertime temperature is 16 degrees. The warmest month of the year is generally July and the coldest month is January. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, with an average annual rainfall total of 32.7 inches. The average snowfall in northern Iowa is 37.6 inches. During spring and summer, warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico produces thunderstorms that can include hail, strong winds and occasionally, tornadoes. Hailstorms are most severe in the northwest portion of the state. The most snowfall occurs in January, February and March. Autumn is usually a very pleasant time of the year in Iowa, with mild days and cool nights.
