Guttenberg is a historic German town located in Clayton County in northeastern Iowa. It is tucked between the Mississippi River and the Limestone Bluffs that edge the area around the town. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,987 residents. Guttenberg was first called Prairie La Porte, meaning "the door to the prairie" by French explorers who first visited the area in 1673. Guttenberg first served as a focal point for westward settlement and as an early governmental and administrative center. It was a major supply center for the general area until the Civil War when railroads and an interior road system combined to decrease Guttenbergs role as a market center. The German immigration began in 1845 and by 1850 the town was quite sizable and nearly all German. The city incorporated in 1851. Guttenbergs charming business district lies right along the Mississippi Riverfront, and the past is preserved in the many limestone buildings built by German immigrants in the mid to late 1800's. Many of these beautiful structures are listed on the National Historic Register. Things to do in the area include boating on the river, hiking and biking in nearby state and national parks, touring the rivers lock and dam or simply enjoying the scenery along a river beach. Stroll Guttenbergs two-mile long Riverwalk, browse antique shops and enjoy casual or fine dining in one of its many restaurants.

Northeastern Iowa has a four-season climate that is classified as humid continental. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September, with severe thunderstorms possible during this time. The northwest section of the state is somewhat drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches. Blizzards are possible in winter and tornadoes can occur during spring and summer. January and February are generally the coldest months, although late winter and early spring storms in March and April have been known to produce large amounts of snow. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumns are generally mild, sunny and pleasant.
