Oskaloosa
is a city of approximately 11,000, located in Mahaska County in southeast Iowa. It serves as the county seat and is home to William Penn University. This historic city got its name from the Creek Indian princess, Ouscaloosa, who married Seminole Chief Osceola, which means "last of the beautiful." The very first white settlers arrived in the area in 1835, led by Nathan Boone, who was the youngest son of Daniel Boone. He selected it to be the first site of Fort Des Moines, which sat high on a ridge between the Skunk River and Des Moines River. This ridge was originally called The Narrows. In the town square stands a statue of Chief Mahaska, the 19th-century leader of the Native American tribe called Ioways, for whom Mahaska County was named. Also located in the town of Oskaloosa are two private homes designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Alsop House is located at 1907 A Street, and the Lamberson House at 511 North Park Avenue. The Nelson Pioneer Farm, located just northeast of town is listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites, and the city is also host to the Southern Iowa Fair. Art on the Square is an annual event held in the downtown city square, as is the Sweet Corn Serenade, which features musicians playing on the bandstand, games, and lots of delicious sweet corn on the cob and other foods. A lighted Christmas Parade usually takes place in Oskaloosa in early December.

South-central Iowa has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often humid and winters are cold and snowy. During the six warmer months of the year, the prevailing moist southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico produces summer rainfall and thunderstorms. These storms are sometimes severe and may produce high winds, hail, torrential rains and occasionally a tornado, with Iowa being in the path of Tornado Alley. Hailstorms are more severe in the northwest portion of the state. Seasonal snowfall across the state is 32 inches and the snow season generally runs late October through mid-April. The most snowfall occurs in January, February and March and blizzards are a possibility. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year in southern Iowa, with mild days and cool nights producing colorful fall foliage.
