Knoxville is a city of approximately 8,000, located in Marion County in south-central Iowa. It is about 25 miles southeast of Des Moines. Knoxville is known for being home to the Knoxville Raceway complex and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum. The Hall of Fame and Museum preserves and showcases the past and future of sprint car racing. The first floor of the 36,000 square- foot museum features the Bill and Sarah Rinehart lobby, the Arizona Barn Gift Shop, the Veterans Memorial Conference Room, the Don Lamberti National Sprint Car Museum, and the Rolscreen National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. This ultra-modern facility, constructed to overlook the second turn of the Knoxville Raceway, also features 20 VIP suites leased to corporations and dedicated sprint car fans for a special view of the track from the comfort of their suite. The fourth floor of the structure, known as the Marion County Fair Tower, provides a spectacular view of the track, as well as the greater Knoxville area. Other attractions in Knoxville include the Marion County Historical Village, which features a collection of authentic buildings, including a church built in 1906, a general store, the Stage Coach Inn and the Little Red Schoolhouse. Lake Red Rock is located about six miles north of Knoxville and is the largest lake in Iowa. This beautiful lake offers boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and bicycle trails and picnicking. Several special events are held year round in Knoxville, such as Pioneer Days in the first weekend of June and Memories of Christmas Past, held the last Sunday in November and the first Sunday in December.

Knoxville Weather & Climate

South-central Iowa has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often humid and winters are cold and snowy. During the six warmer months of the year, the prevailing moist southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico produces summer rainfall and thunderstorms. These storms are sometimes severe and may produce high winds, hail, torrential rains and occasionally a tornado, with Iowa being in the path of Tornado Alley. Hailstorms are more severe in the northwest portion of the state. Seasonal snowfall across the state is 32 inches and the snow season generally runs late October through mid-April. The most snowfall occurs in January, February and March and blizzards are a possibility. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year in southern Iowa, with mild days and cool nights producing colorful fall foliage.
