Urbandale
is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area, located in Polk and Dallas counties in central Iowa. As of a special census taken in 2005, the population 35,904 residents. In July 2007, Money Magazine ranked Urbandale as the 39th best place to live in the United States. Urbandale incorporated as a city in 1917. In its early days, it served as a streetcar suburb of Des Moines with four coal mines in the town. When the city incorporated, the population was just 298 people, but it grew rapidly and by 1970, it had a population of 14,434 people. Urbandale is home to the Living History Farms, where Pope John Paul II spoke to a crowd of an estimated 350,000 on October 4, 1979. Nearby Des Moines offers an abundance of attractions, restaurants and shopping. The area offers many parks with hiking and biking trails, swimming, picnic facilities, tennis courts and golf courses. The Des Moines Art Center is housed in a striking contemporary complex designed by three internationally recognized architects and contains a collection of major 19th, 20th and 21st century masterpieces. Other attractions near Urbandale include a weekly Farmers Market, the Des Moines Botanical & Environmental Center, Blank Park Zoo, the Des Moines Symphony, the Ballet Des Moines, the Iowa State Fair, and several racetracks and casinos.

The southern portion of Iowa has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often humid and winters are cold and snowy. During the six warmer months of the year, the prevailing moist southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico produces summer rainfall and thunderstorms. These storms are sometimes severe and may produce high winds, hail, torrential rains and occasionally a tornado. Hailstorms are more severe in the northwest portion of the state than in southern Iowa. Seasonal snowfall across the state is 32 inches and the snow season generally runs late October through late March. The most snowfall occurs in January, February and March and blizzards are a possibility. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year in Iowa, with mild days and cool nights that produce colorful fall foliage.
