Arnolds-Park
is a small town located in Dickinson County in northwest Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,162 residents. Arnolds Park is situated in the center of the Iowa Great Lakes resort region, making it a popular tourist spot. It is also home to a historic amusement park, also called Arnolds Park. Located on Lake Okoboji, the amusement park offers a raceway and boat excursions, rides, concerts and other special events, food, sandy beaches and boat rentals. Built in 1889, Arnolds Park is one of the longest operating amusement parks in the world. Its known for its historic wooden roller coaster named The Legend. Other major landmarks of the city include the Central Emporium shopping mall, the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum and the Iowa Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Another attraction located in Arnolds Park is the Abbie Gardner Sharp Cabin Museum, site of the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre, which was one of the few violent conflicts between European settlers and Native Americans. Pillsbury Point State Park is located next to the cabin/museum. The Iowa Great Lakes resort region includes Spirit Lake, West Okoboji, East Okoboji and Silver Lakes, all of which are of glacial origin. Spirit Lake is the largest at four miles long and 3 miles wide. The Okoboji Lakes region has been a favorite family vacation area for more than 100 years. All kinds of outdoor recreational activities are available, including boating, swimming and almost every other type of water sport imaginable, nature trails for hiking, golf and more. The Arnolds Park area is truly a recreational haven for people of all ages.

Northwest Iowa lies in the humid continental zone and has four distinct seasons. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September. Severe thunderstorms are possible during this time. However, this northwest section is drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions of the state. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches and varies from 40 inches in the northeast to 20 inches in the extreme southeast corner of the state. Blizzards are not uncommon and summertime tornadoes are possible. January and February are generally the coldest months. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumn "Indian Summers" are a result of the dominance of air masses moving across the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean.
