Lake-Park
is a small, friendly town located in Dickinson County in northwest Iowa near the Iowa Great Lakes Area. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,023 residents. Trappers Bay State Park is located just west of Lake Park and the community is situated around beautiful Silver Lake. This area is known for its four seasons of outdoor recreational activities, including boating, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. Lake Park lies along the southern and eastern shoreline of Silver Lake, which is 1,041 acres in size and offers 9.6 miles of shoreline. There are three hard-surfaced boat ramps around the lake for boaters use - one on the west end and another on the south side just off of Iowa Highway 9 along Country Club Drive. The third ramp is on the east side of the lake just north of the dam. There are no motor restrictions on Silver Lake and fishing is a year-round activity. Fish commonly caught in the lake include Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie, Yellow Perch and Bullhead. Other recreational opportunities near Lake Park include camping, picnicking, swimming and golf. In addition, the Northwest Iowa Snowmobile Alliance maintains several miles of snowmobile trails in northwest Iowa, with trails connecting to most communities within the three-county area and also with trails in bordering counties.

Lake Park Weather & Climate

Northwest Iowa lies in the humid continental zone and has four distinct seasons. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September. Severe thunderstorms are possible during this time. However, this northwest section is drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions of the state. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches and varies from 40 inches in the northeast to 20 inches in the extreme southeast corner of the state. Blizzards are not uncommon and summertime tornadoes are possible. January and February are generally the coldest months. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumn "Indian Summers" are a result of the dominance of air masses moving across the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean.
