Okoboji
is a small city of approximately 800 residents, located in Dickinson County in northeast Iowa. It sits along the western shore of East Okoboji Lake in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. Pikes Point State Park is located within the city limits of Okoboji. This area has become a major summer tourist attraction, with a growing number of resorts around the lakes. For over 100 years, families have come to Lake Okoboji, which is a region rich in heritage and abundant in recreational activities. Visitors of all ages are drawn to the blue lakes, the sunshine and the fun times. Activities at Okoboji include fishing and boating, and almost every other water sport imaginable. There are nature trails for hiking, golf courses and amusement parks nearby. Lake Okoboi is especially well known for its fishing of bullheads. Spirit Lake, which is another of the Iowa Great Lakes, contains over 40 species of fish, including walleye and yellow perch. Other nearby attractions include Arnolds Park, which is home to a historic amusement park, the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum and the Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Northwest Iowa lies in the humid continental zone and has four distinct seasons. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September. Severe thunderstorms are possible during this time. However, this northwest section is drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions of the state. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches and varies from 40 inches in the northeast to 20 inches in the extreme southeast corner of the state. Blizzards are not uncommon and summertime tornadoes are possible. January and February are generally the coldest months. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumn "Indian Summers" are a result of the dominance of air masses moving across the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean.
